I have always been amazed at how many good and pleasant things are associated with the spring. If you asked a hundred people what their favorite season of the year was I would bet that only a handful of them would answer spring. The summer is fun- you get to go swimming and take vacation and go on picnics and a host of other pleasant experiences. The winter offers the adventure of sledding and the beauty of snow and the excitement of Christmas.
And Fall is the best season of all- the weather is perfect and all around you are beautiful shades of brown and yellow and red as leaves begin to fall. But then there is spring. It is wet. It is muddy. It is cold. You are depressed because you have already failed to keep your new year’s resolution. Taxes are due in the spring. Some years I wish we could just skip it. But then I think of something that one of my favorite authors, G. K. Chesterton, had to say:

“(…) when I look across the sun-struck fields, I know in my inmost bones that my joy is
not solely in the spring, for spring alone, being always returning, would be sad. There is somebody or something walking there to be crowned with flowers: and my pleasure is in some promise yet possible and in the resurrection of the dead.”
(From “A Miscellany of
Men”)

Now, I know that G.K. is a little hard to understand, but I think he is on to something. Spring may not be the most enjoyable season in and of itself (unless you like grey rainy days) but it reminds us of something important: the cold of winter is over and new life and better days are on their way! Spring is an example of Paul’s claim that the heart of God is revealed by
nature (check out Romans 1:19-21). Green leaves and little sprouts poking up out of the snow echo the words of 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old is gone and the new is here.”

When God created Eden, Adam and Eve walked in the green of the garden. But when sin entered the world death came with it and the deepest question of our race has, since that time, been: what happens after death? Spring gives us hope of finding that answer. God’s
great plan for the redemption of human kind is this- after death comes new life. It has been foreshadowed in the passing of one season into the next. It was hinted at in the teachings of the Old Testament. And it was revealed for all to see in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And I am glad that Easter is in the spring- as the world wakes up from winter and new life comes into existence around us we are sure of this:

“{…} weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning!”

Spring is the time when trees sprout bouncy, the old year passes and the new year begins, I love spring because it is the symbol of the beginning.
